TWD: Caramel Crunch Bars

It's Tuesday again, and you know what that means! Time for the Tuesday's with Dorie crowd to tackle this weeks recipe, Caramel Crunch Bars, chosen by Whitney of What’s Left on the Table?

This was an interesting bar, with a cinnamon coffee cookie base topped with a layer of melted chocolate and toffee bits. Since I'm not a fan of coffee, I made these for a teacher's dinner at my son's school. I figured they were probably quite tasty if you like coffee, so no need wasting them on me.

For the record, I tried them, and as I expected, they weren't my favorite. I think they have potential though. Maybe I'll give them another try someday minus the java. If you'd like to give them a go, please check out Dorie Greenspan's book "Baking: From my Home to Yours" (I promise, you will love it!), or Whitney's site above.

OK, that's that! See you next week when we make Chocolate Armagnac Cake. (Chocolate what?)

Sorry these weren't up your alley, but I must say your efforts appeared to have paid off: they look delicious to all of us coffee-lovers out there! (Plus, it doesn't hurt that you threw in chocolate and toffee...yum!)

Too bad you didn't like these bars. Your bars look outstanding, though. Here's to next week's recipe!

I like coffee but all I could taste in my base layer was the butter! Your bars look great and I'm sure they were appreciated. Oh, and we thought the prune cake was wonderful.

No worries - they weren't my fave either - but your pics sure do look great!

First your pictures are great! Second sorry you didn't like it. I was on the fence, they were pretty good, but I used dark chocolate on top. They would have been better with milk. Oh well!

They were very buttery. As an ice cream sandwich they didn't quite work. The cookie became too hard to bite into!

Sorry you didn't like it.

I loved it.

But then, I halved the espresso and added cinnamon to make up the difference.

BTW - I'm not too sure about that cake, either.....

too bad you didn't like them. I am not a coffee fan either, so I would try a different spice -- chai maybe. But they look great.

They look great! I didn't have coffee, so I left it out, and next time I'd leave the cinnamon out and just have it be more of a basic cookie crust.

i think going with a chai spice is a great idea by tealady. i'm sure i'd like these given the components, but i've no doubt you could make them better. :)

I'm definitely not much of a coffee fan, but the flavors seemed to work better on day 2. Whoever the lucky eaters were, I'm sure they liked them! Nice job.

Look at those perfect squares -- they're so pretty. I think that these bars are great to give away because chances are most people will like them and they're so easy to make.

I've been meaning to try these ever since I got Dorie's books. And now that it's on TWD, maybe I should. Even though you didn't like the bars, it sure does look delicious.

They look beatiful! I bet that the teachers loved you! Funny, I didn't taste any coffee in mine, and I used pretty strong espresso powder. I did taste cinnamon when I first made them, but not the next day. Funny things, these bars.
