TWD: Toasted-Coconut Custard Tart

For this week's Tuesday's with Dorie recipe, Beryl of Cinemon Girl picked Toasted-Coconut Custard Tart.

You know, I'm not a huge coconut fan, but I can handle it in controlled quantities.

Mounds candy bar = blech!

Toasted Coconut Custard Tart = mmmm, very nice!

Dorie mentioned that the topping to filling ratio was higher for this tart than for a standard coconut cream pie. That was a plus for folks like me, but I'm guessing the coconut lovers might have been left wanting for more coconut. Especially since the filling was not intensely coconut flavored.

I must say I was happy to make a tart, my new favorite thing to bake (along with it's cousin, the pie.) I think the last tart or pie we've made for TWD was back in December.

FYI, I made 1/3 of a recipe, which was perfect for two 4-inch tarts. My crust was made from Dorie's sweet tart dough with nuts, almonds in this case (which is the bomb, by the way).

Well folks, that about wraps it up for this week. Please check out Beryl's blog for the recipe. Or as always, you can (and should!) get yourself a copy of Dorie Greenspan's book "Baking, From my Home to Yours".

P.S. I'm going to try to get a darn-near-perfect pumpkin pie posted this week so we'll see you in a few days.

mounds bar = heaven.
this tart = heaven.
i do love coconut and since this is apparently light on the flavor, i'll be sure to add a bit more to suit my tastes. it's a gorgeous tart, jacque!

Gorgeous tart.

I'm not a Mounds Bar fan either. Way to much coconut, but I love a coconut cream pie...and this tart took it over the top.

Your mini tarts are divine! I didn't have a lot of whipped topping. Maybe because I piped it on rather than spread it on. :)

Every time I have made this tart I have added extra coconut into the pie (but I love coconut!)

Your little tarts look wonderful!

Mounds--ok,
Almond Joy--even better
I like coconut, but this tart was just okay for me. I think it needed chocolate. hehe ;)

Your tart looks fabulous. I like coconut a lot, but I 110% agree with you on the mounds -- blech.

So pretty! You did a much better job slicing your tart and keeping the layers distinct than I did.

Your little tarts look fantastic! I made a third of the recipe too, but I used scraps of other doughs, which weren't as yummy as Dorie's sweet tart dough - that is the best!

Yours looks fantastic - the filling looks smoother than mine.

Love your post and I must get some of the 4" tart pans. Echo your coconut sentiments exactly. Something about that warm coconut custard just is yummo. As always your tarts look fab! Perfecto. Perfect custard consistency. Oh also, I roasted my own pumpkins for the first time this year. Although I haven't used it yet. Put it in a ziploc to the freezer. he he Can't wait to see your pie. I love pumpkin pie.
Great Job!

Wow, those are lovely, lovely looking mini tarts. I think perfect actually. I could not get my custard to set up once it was IN the tart shell, so I need to work on that, but it didn't change the taste a bit!
