TWD: Allspice Crumb Muffins
It's time for another edition of Tuesday's with Dorie, folks. This week Kayte of Grandma’s Kitchen Table chose Allspice Crumb Muffins.
They were a light and fluffy muffin with allspice in both the muffin base and the struesel topping.
I'll cut to the chase... they weren't too pretty, but they tasted *really* good. And I'll take tasty over looks any day.
I have no idea what happened to the struesel topping. My guess is that the butter in the struesel topping wasn't cold enough or maybe there was just too much of it. After baking, the muffin cups were quite greasy... no doubt from all of that butter.
They were enjoyed by all, though, and that's what counts. Thanks Kayte, for a great pick!
If you'd like to see the recipe, check out Dorie Greenspan's book "Baking, From my Home to Yours", or visit Kayte's site.

Not only were they tasty, they smelled wonderful while baking. YUM.
I think the topping looks kind of interesting. Glad you enjoyed these!
No, they weren't pretty, but they tasted fabulous!
i had a mysterious sinking streusel once too. didn't hurt the taste one bit, though--streusel is streusel, after all. :)
Hummmm... I'd still have a great go at them!!! LOL Uh... loooooove butter! lol
I absolutely loved these! And I agree with you..the taste is all that matters (though I happen to really like how yours look even with the melted strusel!!) YUM
My topping did a similiar thing, not sure what happened. But they are delish. Glad you enjoyed.
mine did the exact saaaame thing and my butter was as cold as can be! but its butter and sugar... its destined to melt in a hot oven :)
I have had struesel toppings come out like that too - but as long as they taste great.. that is what matters!
Yay for an easy recipe that tastes great! Love the allspice muffins and the inside of your muffin looks moist and yummy =)
Now you see it, now you don't streusel? I think you suspicion about the butter temp seems reasonable. Glad they were tasty.
I had the same issues you did - and felt the same way - taste wins out over looks. Loved these.
Taste is everything at our house! Your muffins, however, look quite good and tasty. Thanks for baking with me this week!
My husband says the same thing - taste over looks, any day.
Too bad he didn't get to eat any of them!
Tasty definitely wins! I agree that these were very tasty.
Your muffins look delicious, love the spices in it...great with a cup of black coffee :-)
Hey, I love the butter in my baked goods even if I did lighten things up a bit. They looks so delish and with the cool, wet weather we have been having a little hot tea to go with it sounds perfect. Yummo and scrumptious. Sometimes its about the taste. This time. AmyRuth
These muffins look delicious. It's great they came out light - mine were a little bit on the heavy side.
Your muffin tops look so nice and puffy! I will definitely take yummy over pretty any day.
Jacques, those muffins looks so moist and delicious. I've got to get this Dorie cookbook asap, since TWD entries have been making me drool for like a year now.
On another note, yes, I would love a chunk of that peppermint bark :) Great photos of all, too!
I had the same issue with the buttery muffin papers after baking. Over flowing melty butter I think. But you're right, tasty is always better than pretty!
